YouTube sure has come a long way since launching in 2005 and being acquired by Google within a year for $1.65 billion. The company has today announced a collaborative project with a bunch of classical music institutions and artists in the context of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra program, and I think it’s awesome. Starting today until January 28, 2009, musicians are invited to submit two videos: a personal interpretation of an original Tan Dun composition, written specifically for this program, and a talent video designed to demonstrate their musical and technical abilities. The semi-finalists will be selected by an impressive panel made up of members from the London Symphony Orchestr ...

Compared to the ZzzPhone—a modern marvel of engineering and/or MSPaint—the i6-Goal is sort of boring: it's got no QWERTY, 3G, two-week battery, male enhancement powers, etc. It does, however, appear to be real. Announced by TechFaith Wireless and QIGI, two Chinese companies that very much seem to exist, the i6-Goal is a reassuringly modest accomplishment. The touchscreen phone is a relatively normal quad-band GSM phone, featuring a 2MP camera, GPS and an SD slot. The hardware actually looks quite similar to that of the HTC Touch, which perhaps not coincidentally can hackishly run Android. Notably, the handset will be the first released in both Windows Mobile or Android flavors, s ...

During my high school days I spent most of my spare time coding various stuff, so I have a good working knowledge of some application programming languages (C/C++, Pascal/Delphi, Assembler) and how a computer works internally. Recently I was given the book On Intelligence where Jeff Hawkins describes numerous interesting ideas on how one would actually design a brain. As I have no formal background in computer science, I would like to broaden my knowledge in the direction of neural networks, pattern recognition, etc., but don't really know where to start reading. Like Wanted come to life, the Pentagon's now funding $22 million into researching bullets that could change course mid-flight to hit their targets. DARPA, the Defense Department's R&D office, is handing out $12.3 million to Lockheed Martin and $9.5 million to Teledyne Scientific & Imaging to design .50-caliber sniper rifles with guided ammo. DARPA had previously thrown money into laser-guided bullets, but the stuff Lockheed Martin's working on—called Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance (Exacto)—would be able to travel accurately regardless of the surrounding environment. Though public details are (obviously) scarce, the rifle may include “fin-stabilized projectiles, spin-stabilized ...

The BlackBerry Storm has received a major operating system update just days after its release, while the Android T-Mobile G1 hasn’t really received anything major since its arrival into the big wide mobile world. The T-Mobile G1 is somewhat plagued with usability problems and is Google doing anything about it? Apparently not, the G1 still suffers from crashes with text messages, won’t allow a G1-er to hang up after a call, and dies after four hours on standby apparently. Isn’t it about time Google stopped concentrating on the G1’s Amazon MP3 Store and turned their attention to the problems at hand, or do they really want the G1 to fall so far behind par with the BlackBerry Storm that ...

Nokia has unveiled a new flagship touch-screen smartphone, the Nokia N97, which Nokia hopes will infuse new life into their N-series range of multimedia orientated mobile phones. Vice president of Nokia’s Devices unit, Jonas Geust, says: “This is really the start of the new N-series … really kicking off the next wave. It's been a long time coming, but after dabbling with touch on the midrange 5800, Nokia has finally brought a touchscreen to its brand new flagship S60 smartphone, the N97. But it's not quite a full dive into touch—there's still a horizontal QWERTY keyboard hidden below the 3.5" 640x360 resistive touchscreen and accesable via a smooth 30° flip mechanism. The N97 will run an even further touch-enhanced Symbian OS, S60 v5, which features the 5800's quick contacts bar and adds an assortment of customizable desktop widgets that can pipe in your Facebook info, RSS feeds and the like, much like those found on Nokia's internet tablet OS. The widgets will be open to third party developers and ...

An anonymous reader writes "Now that Intel has unleashed its next-generation Core i7 processors, all eyes are turned to AMD and its incoming wave of 45nm CPUs. To get a feel for AMD's future competitiveness, The Tech Report has taken a pair of 2.7GHz 45nm Opterons (with 75W power envelopes) and put them through the paces against Intel Xeons and older, 65nm Opterons in an extensive suite of performance and power efficiency tests — from Cinema 4D and SPECjbb to computational fluid dynamics and a custom XML handling benchmark. The verdict: AMD's new 45nm quad-core design is a notable improvement over the 65nm iteration, and it proves to be a remarkably power-efficient competitor to Intel' ...

In a move that will undoubtedly increase its street cred among technophiles and tinkerers alike, Atheros announced that it's releasing the specs to allow open source drivers for its ATH5K and ATH9K chip families. The move comes after Atheros first released some open source drivers for newer 802.11n chipsets and now the company is finally opening up its HAL (hardware abstraction layer) to developers, even using Linux as the reference public code base. No word on when any of this stuff will be released, but rest assured, we'll be on the lookout for more info -- we're sure the hackers out there are champing at the bit.Filed under: Wireless, NetworkingAtheros lets open source devs in on the WiFi ...

With energy conservation and easy eco-friendliness on just about everybody's agenda these days, one of the most popular concepts is the “Smart Home,” a living environment that knows just how much power you actually need to be comfortable and gives you not a drop more. Nokia's hopping on that wagon with its new Nokia Home Control Center, a Linux-based platform that will control your house's resources via your mobile phone. According to Nokia, the NHCC will allow third-party developers to create services that are added onto the accessibility platform. That way, you'll rarely come across an incident where some new smart home tech you bought doesn't actually work with your main controller. ...
